A MUST have if you have a GoPro Hero 4 + Pole,
Pros:
– Remotely take pictures or record videos.
– Way easier and faster to use than connecting your camera to a phone using the app.
– It takes like 3 GoPro Hero 4 full batteries under heavy use to drain the remote battery.
Cons:
– It happened a couple times that it disconnects from the camera, and reseting the conection is needed (it is not so complicated, but still).
– It takes like 5 to 10 seconds from when you turn on the controller for it to turn on the camera and be ready for action, wish this was a little faster. (still it is faster and easier than the app).
– Even though it is water proof, WiFi signal does not work underwater unless it is really close (almost touching it) to the camera
– I see some weird glare on the remote screen, don’t know if it is normal, but does not look good, I am going to contact GoPro support to ask.
– Wish the batteries were replacable for the case that they start lasting less over time and usage.

Works well and very convenient,
Unlike using the GoPro app on my iPhone 6, the smart remote shows only what is on my Hero 4 Silver’s front LED display, and not any image like on my iPhone. So why did I get this instead of just using my iPhone? Because there are lots of situations where it’s so much simpler to take photos and videos with this than with an iPhone–selfies using a pole (which you have to hold in one hand, and can mount this on the pole; holding an iPhone in your other hand is awkward), videos while bicycle riding, skiing, snowboarding, snow shoeing, etc. (you can wear this on your wrist while the GoPro is mounted whereever you like), etc. Yes, the Hero 4 Silver does have a time lapse mode that you can use as a self timer, but it’s so much easier to just use the smart remote.
Initially you have to pair this with your camera. I’m not sure why, but it took at least half a dozen tries before it worked. Once paired, though, you don’t have to do it again.
There is a few second delay from when you turn on the remote until you see the LED screen, but it’s no big deal.
Unlike my Hero 4 Silver, which has a conventional mini USB port and a replaceable battery, this uses a proprietary USB charging cable like no other I’ve ever seen, and the battery is not replaceable; if you lose that cable or forget to bring it with you on vacation, you’re out of luck.
When you’re not charging this, there is a metal “key” that fits into the charging slot so that you can attach the smart remote to a lanyard, car keys, etc. This also comes with a wrist band to wear this on your wrist. It’s really just a simple velcro strip. However, when it’s on you can fit the remote into the plastic holder on the GoPole Reach (or on a similar product). Fortunately the wrist strap is fairly simple to take on and off.
Also, while the strap works well on your wrist, if you’re thinking of wrapping it around the sleeve of a ski jacket, think again. It’s not really large enough, and even if you get it to stay, since there is no buckle, one good fall and the velcro will come undone and your smart remote will be off in the snow someplace.
The smart remote uses the GoPro WiFi network, so you don’t need a data plan or WiFi hotspot to use this, and it has zero impact on any data plan you have.
One of the benefits of the Hero 4 Silver is a touch screen that lets you change all the settings with a touch instead of having to scroll through them, as was true on my Hero 3 Silver and is true of the smart remote. As a practical matter, it’s faster for me to use the touch screen rather than the smart remote to change settings, though obviously that’s not possible if you’re camera is nowhere near you (like taking pictures of wildlife), though I typically don’t do that.
Bottom line: I held off buying this because initially I thought using the GoPro app on my iPhone 6 would be simple, but this is really much easier for the kind of photos and videos that I take. So far it works quite well. Just don’t overpay.
Update January 14, 2015: The lowest selling price with shipping on Amazon has now increased to slightly more than double the list price that this product sells for at REI, GoPro, etc. Most of the time Amazon has great prices, but this isn’t one of them.
Update January 17, 2015: I used this today to take a couple of hundred photos and videos at my granddaughter’s birthday party. My Hero 4 Silver was mounted on a GoPole and the smart remote was in a bracket on the handle. It was so much easier to use the smart remote to take pictures because I could keep the GoPro away from my face to frame lots of shots.
I also found it easier to cycle through the different modes (video, camera, etc.) using the smart remote rather than the GoPro. Plus I had zero freezing , which occasionally I have when switching modes using the GoPro itself.
The only issue I had was that after 2 hours with the camera on the whole time and connected to the smart remote, the WiFi connection somehow was lost, though of course I could still take pictures using the GoPro shutter button itself.
So regardless of whether you take selfies or want to operate your GoPro from a distance, the smart remote is very handy to have for everyday shooting. I wish I had gotten it sooner.
