Fast response times but no display or lights on front and new issues come up over time,
First paragraph summarizes this long review.
Overall happy with the unit. It does what it is supposed to. Taking one star away as this player does not have a SINGLE light on the front that comes on to indicate it is powered on. None. I am not talking about a nice display like the older units have that would show playback time, etc. I mean it does not have ANY light. If you want to know if it is powered, you need to switch your input to the player and see if any picture is outputted. Some may say this is good as it does not distract while watching movies but I do not like this at all. No light makes it easier to forget it on to waste electricity and produce heat. Another star taken as it would not play MP4 videos that my 2012 Samsung TV can. Further Samsung removed the Screen Mirroring feature that models from previous years had (this allows you to mirror your phone’s screen on your TV). Since these 2 issues are firmware fixable, I will try to remember to update this review and increase stars if Samsung addresses in a future firmware update. Lastly, took another star as of May 4th as I now discovered an annoying AV sync issue that requires adjustments to audio delay so that video and audio are in sync.
Got this BD player at a brick and mortar store (name starts and ends with a red T) last week (03/07/2015). While I was aware of the J models (2015), these units are not supposed to be available in the distribution channel just yet (Amazon.com got those just 2-3 days ago, it was only available from 3rd party sellers before) so I was lucky to find one on the shelf. Given that, not surprisingly, the J5700 was labeled and rang up in their system as a F5700.
My previous Blu-Ray player was again a Samsung – BD-E5900 (2012). The 5700 does not have the 3D features 5900 series have, but I never watched a 3D movie at home and do not plan to ever do so and thus “downgraded” to 5700. FWIW, there was nothing wrong with the E5900, just gifted it to a friend, still going strong to this date.
Compared to the E5900, this unit feels faster in load times but personally do not mind having to wait 10s extra while the movie starts. Played 2-3 BD disks on it without a problem, outputting Dolby Digital True HD and DTS Master HD to my receiver (Onkyo TX-NR616) without issues. But this is to be expected, BD is no longer new technology (I had the “first” BD player they made – the BD-P1000, when it was still $800 but it eventually stopped playing more recent disks). Player did not “see” my Samsung UN65ES6500 TV (2012) and did not enable BD-Wise like my E5900 did but I sometimes prefer manual settings anyway.
The player has a functional Amazon Videos app that outputs Dolby Digital+ audio to my receiver (BDE5900 did not get an Amazon app even with the updates from late last year). There is Hulu, Netflix and some other streaming services but I do not use them so cannot comment on how they work. There is also the Opera app store with many online sites that I guess can be called apps. DLNA playback worked right away and the player was able to find my NAS and stream from it easily. It allowed me to fast forward and reverse all video files it could play, unlike my TV, which would not FF or reverse some files. Unfortunately, player does not recognize all MP4 files for some reason and folders would show blank, where my TV, tablet and phones play those via the same DLNA server just fine. The manual states the BD player supports MP4 containers and lists specific audio and video codecs. I took some time and compared the manual of my TV and this player and while they looked identical in terms of file support, some files would just not work on the Bluray player. The few AVI and MKV files I have played fine.
Player claims to support an interesting feature – if you insert a CD and a USB flash drive in it, it would magically create MP3 versions of the audio tracks. Have not tried it myself; also think last year’s BD-H players could do the same too. Just mentioning in case someone need this feature.
Remote control is same as the 2012 players, nothing new here. It works to control the power and volume on Samsung TV as well (main reason I stayed with the same brand). It is IR compatible and the remote works not because of HDMI-CEC.
My equipment is all hardwired so cannot comment on Wi-Fi. It did pick up the statically assigned IP address I gave it right away.
The unit came with firmware version 1000 that I immediately upgraded to the latest (as of writing this) version 1003 without problems. Download of firmware took much longer than on any update on my old E5900 but that could have been due to network conditions and not because of firmware size. Again, the unit is so new that Samsung does not even have firmware files or change log posted online on their website. Maybe it downloaded directly from servers in South Korea as their CDN do…
