Previously the Extreme was labeled 45MB/s (read and write). The new Extreme is advertised as 60MB/s read and 40MB/s write. One might wonder about the new card’s downgraded write speed, but it is faster than advertised.
I tested the new SanDisk Extreme 32GB SDHC 60MB/s card using 7 different USB 3.0 card readers. Every one exceeded 75 MB/s read and reached 55MB/s write (range was 54.8-55.3MB/s across all readers with CrystalDiskMark 3.0.3 Sequential 1GB random test data, best of 5 passes). The improved write speed makes the Extreme almost as fast as the Extreme Plus measured at 60MB/s write speed but short of the Plus’ 95MB/s highest read speed.
Compare this with the previous generation Extreme 45MB/s, which tested between 44-47MB/s read and 41-43MB/s write.
I recommended the previous version of the SanDisk Extreme quite often in the past. It was a good value considering one could spend twice as much for the Extreme Pro that probably wouldn’t be much faster in most digital cameras. But more cameras today support UHS-I and can actually write above 70MB/s. For those cameras faster cards (Extreme Pro) can make a difference. With the Extreme getting a speed boost, it further increases its value and remains a great choice for many cameras.

A couple of years ago when I upgraded to a Canon Rebel T3i, I also needed to switch from compact flash memory cards to SDHC memory cards. I had purchased a pro-grade one and a SanDisk Extreme card based on reviews that indicated that it was every bit as good as the pro one and in some regards faster. I’ve been very pleased with the Extreme card to the point that I even brought an additional one because I felt it performed better than the pro one for about half the price. So when I was given the opportunity to review this newer SDXC card I figured I’d give it a try. It claimed to be compatible with major brand DSLRs so I figured it couldn’t hurt to give it a try. I’ve been shooting with it in my camera and it’s performing every bit as well as the SanDisk Extreme SDHC (45MB/s) and it’s likely a a few fractions of a second faster but I wouldn’t know how to test that so I’ll take the manufacturer’s word for it that it’s faster. I was able to capture my lightening fast two year old just as well using this card as I could with my older SDHC Extreme card.
With this 64GB card in my Canon T3i depending on the picture size I select, I can capture between 2200 (RAW) to 9999 pictures (using every setting outside of L [7885], and RAW+L [1745]) on this card.
I’m pleased with the card and like that it has a ton of storage space.
