Amazing External Media Drive; Works Perfectly with Macs,
Starting with the nicely packaged box, it comes with the hard drive itself with your choice of capacity, a four foot USB 3.0 cable, a power supply with actually a decent length cable, and a nice quick start guide. However, the drive is truly a plug and play device, so you really don’t need the quick start guide.
Moving onto the look and feel of the device itself, it has a nice, modern enclosure that actually looks very classy on my large glass desk. Other than that, it has an extremely clean look, and is impressively almost silent, which is perfect for me in a quiet dorm room.
As a little background on me, I love consuming high-quality media on either my Apple desktop or Macbook Pro 13 inch running Mac OS X 10.10 Yosemite. Furthermore, I am an emerging professional photographer, so I need fast, reliable storage to back up all of my photos and necessary files. I chew through storage like no other, and am constantly expanding my storage and backup capacities. The Expansion has worked great for me so far, and I look forward to filling it up with a variety of media in the coming years.
As a side note, I don’t really see any major differences between this, newer version of the Seagate Expansion and the older version, apart from the hard drive enclosure itself. In both versions, there is a discrete lack of fans or other cooling technology, which could degrade the performance of the drive. For enterprise-grade solutions, I would definitely suggest getting an external drive or RAID enclosure with an included fan to cool down the drives. Other than that, I haven’t opened the enclosure, so I’m not positive what drives Seagate is using, but it’s possible that Seagate is using newer drives as well as the new outer enclosure.
In short, the Seagate Expansion is a great choice for your storage and backup needs. The fact of the matter is that even with the quality hard drives Seagate produces, at one point or another all mechanical hard drives will fail. In order to have true data redundancy and security, it is in best practices to have your files in as many as three or four locations: the original file, an onsite backup, an offsite backup at a relatives house, and hopefully online through a cloud service provider as well. This can get quite expensive, and with the great capacities for the money that the Expansion offers, as well as legendary Seagate quality, this is an amazing choice for any of your external data needs. This will definitely become a staple on my desk, along with all of my other technology, and I look forward to using this drive for years to come.

Consolidation is a beautiful thing,
Also, 4TB seems to be the sweet spot right now for price/size ratio for external 3.5″ storage (3.5″ drives always require an external power source, whereas 2.5″ external drives – which are sometimes slower – usually do not). I like that you can leave it plugged in, but it only powers on when you attach the USB cable.
USB 3.0 really is a vast improvement over previous versions. I’m dumping all my files from five other drives on this monster, and 500GB are transferring through the computer from one drive to another in around 2-3 hours, both large and tiny files.
Worth noting is that the case seems very thin around the drive, which is probably good for heat dispersion, but will not provide the kind of protection you’d want if you were constantly transporting this drive.
I now have on here hundreds of seasons of TV shows, most in HD, nearly a thousand movies, most in HD, hundreds of music albums, books, maps, comics, software setup files, etc., and I STILL have room to grow. To get all these things consolidated and organized – and all accessible with a single drive powered up – is really fantastic.
