   Great budget tv, May 24, 2015

   Impressed! Bought this for our guest bedroom. The set up was easy for non techy people like my husband and I. We are not into all this smart tv has to offer but our children are. Our son in law and daughter visit every summer for a month and we needed a “streaming” TV for their work while they are here. We didn’t want to spend a ton of money but we wanted a decent quality product. This was the answer. Never heard of TCL but discovered they’ve been around for over 30 years making tv’s for RCA, Magnovox and others all that time. The only downfall is the remote with no number pad so you have to scroll through all the channels to find the one you want. That’s a pain – glad it’s not our main TV. The picture and sound quality is clear and sharp. The colors are vibrant. All in all a great budget TV. I gave it four stars because of the remote.

   As I write this we are in the process of dealing with TCL’s meager customer support. After having our TV for a short while it would start turning off on itself in the middle of the program. This has become more and more common and now the TV takes sometimes 5 to 6 minutes to turn on every press the button. And their credit they seem to be helpful on the phone when I call in however they never follow through with what they promise. They keep telling me they will send me emails that never show up and follow up with phone calls that never happen. I will update this if and when everything gets fixed but the fact that the TV broke this soon and that is been such a pain to work with their customer service I would not recommend this to any family or friend. Please also note that some Roku channels are limited when it is built into the TV like this which is something I was not aware of before purchasing this unit. I am leaving this at two stars as it really was a good TV until the issue started happening. Though I’m tempted to move it to one as a new TV should not act like this and customer service should be way more responsive. I am fairly certain it’s a foreign call center and that the people I’m talking to have very very limited resources to deal with my issue. I do believe most companies can be judged by how they fix their errors and I’ve not been impressed so far.

   Update: after about a month of calling the issue has been resolved. I am leaving the review at three stars. I must say that I do like the TV, but the the customer service left a lot to be desired for, and I do not think a TV should fail in 6 months… it seems when searching down the comments this is NOT an isolated incident either. The first real follow up I got was the PR person who responded to my post here, not a promised return phone call or email that the phone service said they would send. After calling a third time they actually got testy with me saying that a technician is scheduled so that I should not be upset. My response was “how would I know a technician was scheduled if you never told me, and this needs to be scheduled with me so I can be home”. 5 days later a box of electrical parts showed up at my door. Again, no one told me to look out for this or that they would be shipped to me directly. A heads up goes a long way. A week after a technician finally called and he scheduled a time and fixed the issue. So far so good. Hopefully this story helps others who experience this same issue…

   This is a wonderful budget tv. Was skeptical when I bought it but a tv this size with smart apps at a ~$400 price is pretty hard to come by. Set it up, got myself settled, and was a little taken back by the image quality. It was very grainy and pixelated almost. I ALMOST became dismayed until *dun dun dun* I found out you could optimize the image quality!!! From what I have seen in the reviews that is a gripe is that you can see the pixels. All you have to do is dial back the sharpness because it is preset very high. Problem solved. Image quality after this is great, sound is meh (as are most flat panels today), smart tv layout is intuitive, quick, and very easy to use, remote is so simplistic it almost made me cry (tears of joy).
   Overall, if you are on a budget and want a decently sized tv with smart apps: this is the tv for you.
